Geftinat contains Gefitinib, which is an oral anticancer medicine. It belongs to the group called tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and is mainly used for treating certain types of lung cancer. Geftinat is prescribed to patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that carries specific mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene. By targeting these abnormal growth signals, it helps slow down or stop the spread of cancer cells.

Mechanism of action:
Gefitinib blocks the activity of the EGFR tyrosine kinase, an enzyme that stimulates cancer cell growth and survival when overactive. By inhibiting this pathway, Geftinat reduces uncontrolled cell division, shrinks tumors, and delays disease progression in patients with EGFR-mutated NSCLC.

Uses:

  • Treatment of locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with activating EGFR mutations

  • Sometimes prescribed when standard chemotherapy is not suitable or has failed

Adverse effects:
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, and skin rash (often acne-like). Some patients may also experience dry skin, itching, or nail changes. Serious but less common side effects include lung inflammation (interstitial lung disease), severe liver problems, and eye irritation.
