Peg-L Aspatero contains Pegylated L-asparaginase, an anticancer enzyme used primarily in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The pegylation (attachment of polyethylene glycol) extends the drug’s activity in the body, allowing less frequent dosing and reducing immune reactions compared to standard L-asparaginase.

Mechanism of action:
L-asparaginase works by breaking down the amino acid L-asparagine, which leukemia cells require to grow and survive. Normal cells can make their own L-asparagine, but leukemia cells cannot. By depleting L-asparagine in the blood, Peg-L Aspatero starves leukemia cells and inhibits their growth.

Uses:

  • Treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children and adults

  • Often used as part of combination chemotherapy regimens for better effectiveness

  • Reduces proliferation of leukemia cells and supports remission

Adverse effects:
Common side effects include allergic reactions, fever, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and injection site reactions. Other potential effects include pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), liver function abnormalities, blood clotting issues, and high blood sugar. Rare but serious reactions include severe hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis.
