Jakavi contains Ruxolitinib, an oral medication used to treat certain blood disorders caused by overactive bone marrow, such as myelofibrosis and polycythemia vera. It belongs to a class of drugs called Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. Jakavi helps reduce symptoms like enlarged spleen, fatigue, and abnormal blood counts by targeting the signaling pathways that cause excessive blood cell production.

Mechanism of action:
Ruxolitinib inhibits JAK1 and JAK2 enzymes, which are involved in the signaling pathways that regulate blood cell production and inflammation. By blocking these enzymes, Jakavi helps normalize blood cell production, reduce spleen size, and control inflammation, improving symptoms and quality of life.

Uses:

• Myelofibrosis: to reduce spleen size and improve related symptoms

• Polycythemia vera: in patients who do not respond adequately to standard therapy

• Helps manage fatigue, night sweats, itching, and bone pain associated with these conditions

Adverse effects:
Common side effects include low blood counts (anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia), dizziness, headache, bruising, and weight gain. Serious but less common effects include serious infections, liver problems, or increased risk of bleeding.
