Vonavir is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medicine containing Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) + Lamivudine (3TC) + Efavirenz (EFV). It is widely used as a single-tablet regimen for managing HIV infection.
Mechanism of Action
-
Tenofovir & Lamivudine → Both are nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They block the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing the virus from making new DNA.
-
Efavirenz → A non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that binds directly to reverse transcriptase, further stopping viral replication.
-
Together, they reduce HIV multiplication, lower viral load, and improve immune function (CD4 cell count).
Uses
-
Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents.
-
Helps reduce complications of HIV and improves quality of life.
-
Also lowers the risk of HIV transmission when viral load is suppressed.
