Cicbase contains Prucalopride, a prokinetic agent used to treat chronic constipation in adults when traditional laxatives are not effective. It helps to stimulate bowel movements by enhancing the natural contractions of the intestine.
Mechanism of action:
Prucalopride is a highly selective serotonin (5-HT₄) receptor agonist. It works by activating 5-HT₄ receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, which stimulates peristalsis — the natural wave-like contractions that move stool through the intestines. Unlike older drugs in its class, Prucalopride acts specifically on these receptors, reducing the risk of cardiac side effects.
Uses:
-
Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults, particularly when other laxatives fail
-
Helps improve bowel frequency, reduce straining, and relieve discomfort due to constipation
Adverse effects:
Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness.
Less common or rare side effects may include:
-
Fatigue or sleep disturbances
-
Vomiting
-
Abdominal bloating or cramps
-
Rarely, mood changes such as anxiety or depression (patients should report these promptly)
