Shivtaf contains Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF), an antiretroviral medication used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection and sometimes chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It is a prodrug of tenofovir that allows lower dosing with better safety for kidneys and bones compared to Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF). Shivtaf is administered as an oral tablet, usually once daily.

Mechanism of Action

  • TAF is converted inside cells to tenofovir diphosphate, the active form.

  • It acts as a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI).

  • Incorporation into viral DNA causes chain termination, blocking HIV or HBV replication.

  • By inhibiting reverse transcriptase, it reduces viral load and improves immune function.

    Uses

    • Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents.

    • Treatment of chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

    • Part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV management.

    • Preferred in patients at risk for kidney or bone complications due to improved safety profile.

      Adverse Effects

      • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

      • Headache or fatigue

      • Abdominal pain

      • Mild rash
