Leucorin contains Calcium Leucovorin (also called folinic acid). It is a form of folic acid (vitamin B9) that is active in the body. It is not chemotherapy itself but is often used with or after chemotherapy to reduce harmful effects or to improve the action of some cancer medicines.
Mechanism
Leucovorin works by:
-
Protecting normal cells from the harmful effects of methotrexate (a chemotherapy drug that blocks folic acid).
-
Strengthening the effect of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in cancer treatment.
In short, it “rescues” healthy cells or boosts cancer treatment depending on how it is used.Uses
-
To reduce side effects of methotrexate (leucovorin rescue).
-
To increase the effectiveness of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in colorectal cancer and other cancers.
-
To treat or prevent folic acid deficiency in some conditions.
