Description
Biovorin contains Calcium Leucovorin (Folinic Acid), which is a form of vitamin B9 (folic acid) already active in the body. It is not chemotherapy itself but is used along with chemotherapy either to protect healthy cells or to increase the action of certain cancer drugs.
Mechanism
-
When given with Methotrexate, Biovorin “rescues” normal cells by bypassing the folic acid block caused by methotrexate (this is called leucovorin rescue).
-
When given with 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), it makes 5-FU work better against cancer cells by strengthening its binding to the target enzyme.
Uses
-
To reduce side effects of Methotrexate (leucovorin rescue)
-
To increase the effectiveness of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) in colorectal and other cancers
-
To treat or prevent folic acid deficiency in certain conditions
Adverse Effects
Common side effects:
-
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
