Axentri contains maraviroc, an antiviral medicine used in the treatment of HIV infection. It is a type of drug called a CCR5 antagonist that helps prevent HIV from entering human immune cells.
Mechanism of Action
-
HIV enters immune cells (CD4+ T-cells) using certain co-receptors, mainly CCR5 or CXCR4.
-
Maraviroc specifically blocks the CCR5 receptor on the surface of immune cells.
-
By doing so, it prevents CCR5-tropic HIV-1 from attaching and entering the cells.
-
This reduces viral replication and helps preserve immune function.
Uses
-
Used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV-1 infection.
-
Effective only against CCR5-tropic HIV-1 (not against CXCR4-tropic or dual/mixed HIV strains).

-
