BEVAZZA contains Bevacizumab, which is a targeted cancer medicine. It is a type of monoclonal antibody that works by blocking the blood supply to tumors. This slows down the growth and spread of cancer.
Mechanism
Bevacizumab attaches to a protein called VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor). VEGF helps cancer cells form new blood vessels (angiogenesis). By blocking VEGF, Bevacizumab prevents new blood vessels from feeding the tumor, so the tumor cannot grow easily.
Uses
Bevacizumab is used in many cancers, often in combination with chemotherapy:
-
Colorectal cancer
-
Lung cancer (non-small cell type)
-
Kidney cancer
-
Ovarian and cervical cancers
-
Brain tumor (glioblastoma)
