Cresp Injection is a long-acting biosimilar of darbepoetin alfa, developed by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. Darbepoetin alfa is a synthetic form of erythropoietin, a hormone naturally produced by the kidneys that stimulates red blood cell production in the bone marrow. Cresp is used to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and chemotherapy. It is administered via subcutaneous or intravenous injection under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

Mechanism of Action

Cresp 40 mcg Injection contains darbepoetin alfa, which binds to erythropoietin receptors on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. This binding stimulates the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of these progenitor cells, leading to increased red blood cell production. The result is an elevation in hemoglobin levels, thereby alleviating symptoms of anemia such as fatigue and weakness.

Uses

Cresp Injection is indicated for:

  • Anemia due to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): In CKD, the kidneys produce insufficient erythropoietin, leading to decreased red blood cell production and anemia. Cresp stimulates erythropoiesis to correct this deficiency.

  • Anemia due to Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy can suppress bone marrow function, resulting in anemia. Cresp aids in stimulating red blood cell production to manage this condition.

    Adverse Effects

Common side effects of Cresp 40 mcg Injection include:

    • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Elevated blood pressure may occur during treatment.

    • Headache and Dizziness: Some patients may experience headaches or dizziness.

    • Injection Site Reactions: Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.

    • Fatigue and Weakness: Paradoxically, some individuals may feel more tired.

    • Nausea and Vomiting: Gastrointestinal discomfort can occur.
