Emletra is a combination HIV medicine.
It contains two drugs in one tablet:
-
Emtricitabine (FTC)
-
Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF)
It is usually used with another HIV medicine (like an integrase inhibitor) as part of a complete HIV treatment regimen.
Mechanism
-
Both Emtricitabine and Tenofovir alafenamide block the HIV enzyme reverse transcriptase, which the virus needs to make copies of itself.
-
This prevents HIV from multiplying.
-
As a result, the virus level in the blood goes down, and the immune system becomes stronger.
Uses
-
Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents (as part of combination therapy).
-
Sometimes used for HIV prevention (PrEP – pre-exposure prophylaxis) in people at high risk, under doctor supervision.
