Finpecia contains Finasteride, a medicine used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia – BPH) in men. It belongs to the class of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. Finpecia helps slow hair loss, promote hair regrowth in some cases, and reduce the size of an enlarged prostate to improve urinary flow.

Mechanism of action:
Finasteride works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink in male pattern baldness and contributes to prostate enlargement. By reducing DHT levels, Finpecia helps slow hair loss and decrease prostate size.

Adverse effects:
Common side effects include decreased libido (sex drive), erectile dysfunction, difficulty ejaculating, and mild breast tenderness or enlargement. Rare side effects may include depression, allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling), and changes in liver function. Finasteride is not recommended for women, especially during pregnancy, because it can cause birth defects.
