Gabasign is a medicine that contains Gabapentin, which is commonly used to treat nerve-related pain and seizures. It belongs to the class of anticonvulsants (anti-seizure drugs) and is often prescribed for conditions like neuropathic pain, epilepsy, and sometimes for anxiety disorders. Gabasign helps calm overactive nerve signals and provides relief from burning, shooting, or tingling pain caused by nerve damage.

Mechanism of action:
Although its exact action is not fully understood, Gabapentin works by binding to the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the nervous system. This reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, which decreases excessive nerve activity. As a result, it helps control seizures and relieves neuropathic pain.

Uses:

• Neuropathic pain due to conditions like diabetes, shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia), or nerve injury

• Epilepsy (used as an add-on therapy for partial seizures)

• Sometimes used off-label for anxiety disorders and sleep problems

Adverse effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, unsteadiness, blurred vision, and weight gain. Some patients may also experience swelling in the legs, tremors, or dry mouth. Rare but serious adverse effects can include mood changes, suicidal thoughts, breathing difficulties (especially in patients with lung disease), and allergic reactions.
