Graftide M contains Mycophenolate Mofetil (500 mg), an immunosuppressant medicine. It is mainly given to patients who have undergone an organ transplant (like kidney, heart, or liver) to prevent the immune system from rejecting the new organ. It is usually prescribed together with other medicines such as steroids, tacrolimus, or cyclosporine for better protection against rejection.

Mechanism of action:
After intake, mycophenolate mofetil is converted in the body to its active form (mycophenolic acid). This active compound blocks an enzyme called inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), which is necessary for making DNA in lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell that drives immune rejection). By reducing lymphocyte multiplication, Graftide M-500 suppresses the immune response and lowers the risk of organ rejection.

Uses:

  • Prevention of organ transplant rejection (kidney, liver, heart)

  • Used as part of a combination therapy with other immunosuppressants

Adverse effects:
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, and weakness. Because it suppresses the immune system, patients may be more prone to infections (respiratory, urinary, skin). It can also cause low blood cell counts (anemia, low platelets, low white cells). Serious but less common risks include liver or kidney problems, stomach ulcers, increased blood pressure, and long-term increased risk of certain cancers (like skin cancer and lymphoma). It should not be used during pregnancy because it can cause birth defects or miscarriage.
