Imatib contains imatinib mesylate, a targeted anticancer medicine. It is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) used mainly in blood cancers and some solid tumors. It works by blocking abnormal signals that make cancer cells grow uncontrollably.
Mechanism of Action
-
Imatinib selectively blocks the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, an abnormal protein produced in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) due to the Philadelphia chromosome.
-
It also inhibits other kinases like c-KIT and PDGFR, which are involved in tumor growth.
-
By blocking these signals, it prevents cancer cell proliferation and induces apoptosis (programmed cell death).
Uses
Imatib is prescribed for:
-
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
-
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with Philadelphia chromosome positivity
-
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs)
-
Certain rare cancers like dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), hypereosinophilic syndrome, and systemic mastocytosis
