Inramed is a medicine whose active ingredient is midodrine hydrochloride. It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-1 adrenergic agonists. Midodrine is used to treat forms of low blood pressure (hypotension), particularly orthostatic hypotension — the drop in blood pressure when a person stands up from sitting or lying down. Because it tightens (constricts) blood vessels, it helps raise blood pressure and reduces symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when changing position. Inramed is taken by mouth in tablet form, with doses that are tailored by a physician depending on how severe the low blood pressure is.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Midodrine acts by stimulating alpha-1 adrenergic receptors on small arteries and veins (arterioles and venules).

  • When these receptors are activated, the smooth muscle in the vessel walls contracts, causing vasoconstriction. This reduces the capacity of veins (which normally may pool blood), increases vascular resistance, and helps raise blood pressure.

  • It is especially helpful during standing or upright posture, where gravity tends to pull blood into the lower limbs; by constricting vessels, midodrine helps prevent excessive pooling of blood and helps maintain sufficient blood flow to the brain.

    Uses:

    • Treatment of orthostatic hypotension (i.e. low blood pressure upon standing up), which can cause dizziness, fainting, lightheadedness.

    • Sometimes used for more general hypotension when it is causing symptoms or limiting daily function.

      Adverse Effects:
Some of the side effects are common and mild; others are more serious or need monitoring.

Common / mild side effects include:

      • Headache

      • Nausea, possibly vomiting

      • Rash or itching of skin

      • Chills, goosebumps

      • Urinary retention or difficulty urinating
