Leugard 22.5 mg Depot Injection contains Leuprolide Acetate, a synthetic hormone used in the treatment of various hormone-related conditions. It is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist that, when administered, initially stimulates and then suppresses the production of certain hormones, leading to a decrease in estrogen and testosterone levels. This suppression is beneficial in treating conditions like prostate cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and central precocious puberty.
Mechanism of Action
Leuprolide Acetate works by overstimulating the pituitary gland, leading to an initial surge in the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This surge temporarily increases the production of sex hormones (testosterone in men and estrogen in women). However, continuous administration of Leugard leads to downregulation of GnRH receptors, resulting in a significant decrease in LH and FSH secretion. Consequently, the production of sex hormones is suppressed, which helps in managing hormone-sensitive conditions.
