Samisafe contains Ademetionine (also known as S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine or SAMe), a naturally occurring compound in the body that plays a key role in liver function, mood regulation, and detoxification. It is commonly used to treat liver disorders and depression associated with liver disease.
Mechanism of action:
Ademetionine acts as a methyl group donor in various biochemical reactions within the body. It helps in the formation of glutathione, an important antioxidant that protects liver cells from toxins and oxidative stress. By improving detoxification and restoring liver enzyme balance, it supports liver regeneration and overall function. It may also increase serotonin and dopamine levels, improving mood.
Uses:
-
Liver diseases such as hepatitis, cholestasis, and cirrhosis
-
Intrahepatic cholestasis (bile flow obstruction within the liver)
-
Depression or fatigue associated with chronic liver conditions
Adverse effects:
Common side effects include nausea, mild abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and insomnia. Rarely, patients may experience anxiety, dry mouth, or skin rashes. It is generally well-tolerated when used under medical supervision.
