TenoHep-AF is an antiviral medication that contains Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF). It is used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and, in some cases, as part of combination therapy for HIV management or prevention. It works by lowering the amount of virus in the body, helping to protect the liver from further damage.

Mechanism of action:
Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF) is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). Once inside the body, it is converted into its active form (tenofovir diphosphate), which blocks the reverse transcriptase enzyme that the virus needs to replicate its DNA. This prevents viral multiplication and reduces the viral load in the blood.

Uses:

  • Chronic Hepatitis B infection — helps control viral replication and prevents liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.

  • HIV-1 infection (in combination with other antiretroviral drugs) — to suppress viral replication.

    Adverse effects:
Common side effects include headache, nausea, fatigue, and abdominal pain.
Less common or serious effects may include:

    • Kidney problems or changes in kidney function

    • Lactic acidosis (rare buildup of lactic acid in the blood)

    • Liver issues or fatty liver changes

    • Bone mineral density loss (less frequent than with older forms like Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate)
