Tenvir-EM is a combination HIV medicine.
It contains two drugs in one tablet:
-
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)
-
Emtricitabine (FTC)
It is usually used along with another HIV medicine to form a complete treatment regimen.
Mechanism
-
Both Tenofovir and Emtricitabine block the HIV enzyme reverse transcriptase, which the virus needs to make copies of itself.
-
This stops the virus from multiplying.
-
As a result, HIV levels in the blood go down, and the immune system becomes stronger.
Uses
-
Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents (always combined with other HIV medicines).
-
Sometimes used for HIV prevention (PrEP – pre-exposure prophylaxis) in people at high risk, as prescribed by a doctor.
