Udibase contains ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), a naturally occurring bile acid. It is used as a liver-protective medicine and helps in the treatment of certain liver and gallbladder disorders.
Mechanism of Action
-
UDCA reduces the production and absorption of cholesterol in the liver and intestines.
-
It helps dissolve cholesterol-containing gallstones.
-
It also protects liver cells by reducing toxic bile acids, improving bile flow, and reducing inflammation.
Uses
-
Gallstones: Dissolution of small, cholesterol-rich gallstones (when surgery is not suitable).
-
Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC): A chronic liver disease where bile ducts are gradually destroyed.
-
Cholestatic liver diseases: Conditions with reduced bile flow.
-
Supportive treatment in various liver disorders to improve liver function.
Adverse Effects
Most people tolerate it well, but possible side effects include:
-
Diarrhea or loose stools
-
Nausea, vomiting
-
Abdominal pain or indigestion
-
Rash or itching (rare)
-
In long-term use, gallstones may become calcified and harder to dissolve
