Vegalis is a brand of sildenafil citrate, the same medicine found in Viagra. Unlike Viagra, which is marketed for men, Vegalis is specially promoted for women. It is sometimes referred to as the “female Viagra.”
Mechanism of Action
-
Sildenafil works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5).
-
This increases the levels of cyclic GMP, which relaxes smooth muscles and improves blood flow.
-
In women, improved blood flow to the genital area may enhance sensitivity, lubrication, and sexual response.
Uses
-
Treatment of female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD) or low sexual desire in some women.
-
Sometimes used off-label for conditions like pulmonary arterial hypertension (same as sildenafil in other brands).
-
Research use in infertility treatment (to improve uterine blood flow), though this is not a standard indication.
Adverse Effects
-
Common: headache, flushing, nasal congestion, dizziness, indigestion.
-
Visual disturbances: blurred vision, sensitivity to light, blue tinge to vision.
-
Low blood pressure (especially if taken with nitrates – dangerous combination).
-
Rare but serious: chest pain, sudden vision or hearing loss, prolonged painful erection (priapism, more relevant in men).
